Accelerated research and development of all vanadium flow batteries, doubling the power of the same volume

Committed to the transformation of national energy structure, large-scale energy storage research and development speed


At the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team is developing a new generation of "power banks" that can play a role in "peak shaving and valley filling" in the power system, helping to establish a new pattern of green and low-carbon energy development in China.


During the Spring Festival, at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team is conducting research and development on a 60 kilowatt stack of all vanadium flow batteries. Compared to the previous generation of 30 kilowatt reactors that have already been put into use in power plants, their power can be fully doubled with the same volume.


Li Xianfeng, a researcher at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: We are currently upgrading the technology of liquid flow batteries, which can further reduce costs, improve system integration, and reduce floor space. Therefore, it should be a huge push for the entire future industrialization of batteries.


The complete name of the "stack" and "battery" referred to by Li Xianfeng is "all vanadium flow battery", which mainly stores the electricity generated by renewable energy in power stations. This "power bank" measures 134 meters in length and 119 meters in width, and more than 700 storage tanks are installed in this space, filled with vanadium ion solutions of different valence states. When charging, electrical energy can be converted into chemical energy; by reverse conversion, it can discharge to alleviate the power demand gap. The 100 megawatt Dalian liquid flow battery energy storage and peak shaving power station using this technology will be connected to the grid in May 2022 and fully charged and discharged by the end of October. It can store up to 400000 kilowatt hours of electricity. Based on the daily per capita electricity consumption of 2 kilowatt hours of Chinese residents, the power station can provide 200000 residents with a daily electricity demand.


Li Xianfeng, a researcher at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: It is our world's first and also the first national level large-scale chemical energy storage power plant demonstration project approved by the National Energy Administration at that time. One of the core functions of this power station is to accommodate a larger proportion of renewable energy generation into the grid, which is of great strategic significance.


Experts said that the current global energy development is in a critical transition period from high carbon to low carbon and then to carbon free. To achieve the goal of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality", a new power generation mode is especially needed. In our country, there are abundant reserves of new energy represented by wind and solar energy. However, wind energy, which moves without wind, and solar energy, which alternates between day and night and starts and stops, have intermittent and fluctuating power generation. After large-scale integration into the power grid, it is required that the power system must have specific response capabilities to ensure the safety of renewable energy supply and even the entire power grid. As a key link between new energy power generation and power consumption, energy storage represented by all vanadium flow battery has become the most mature and popular choice in the world.


Li Xianfeng, a researcher at the Dalian Institute of Chemistry and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences: We will have a significant proportion of clean energy power generation, especially renewable power generation, connected to the grid by 2030 and 2060 for the transformation of the entire national energy structure. This plays a crucial role in solving these discontinuous and unstable power grid connections, and is also a very significant strategic demand for our country.


The "14th Five Year Plan for Science and Technology Innovation in the Energy Field" was jointly prepared by the National Energy Administration and the Ministry of Science and Technology for the first time. Science and technology innovation has been brought to a new height in achieving fundamental changes in the national energy landscape. Focusing on the clean and efficient utilization of energy, the Clean Energy Leading Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has gathered more than 20 energy research institutes and universities' advantageous research forces. It has broken through 55 key technologies and started the construction of 29 industrial demonstration devices, providing strong technical support for building a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system in China and achieving the "dual carbon" goal.
